Delta Historic Weapons: Colt SAA

Brought to you by the Delta Project in collaboration with Double A Arms

The Colt Single Action Army handgun (also known as the Colt Peacemaker, Single Action Army, Colt .45 and sometimes as The Equalizer) is a single action revolver with a revolving cylinder holding six rounds. It was designed for the US government service revolver trials of 1873 by Colt's Manufacturing Company and adopted as the standard military service revolver.

The .45 Colt cartridge was of center fire design containing charges of up to 40 grains of fine grained black powder and a 255 grain blunt round nosed bullet. Relative to period cartridges and most later handgun rounds, it was quite powerful in its full loading.

This pistol is one of the newer creations from the Colt Manufacturing Company of America. This pistol replaces the older “cap and ball” style with a new cartridge loading system. The pistol holds six rounds in a cylinder loaded through a swing out door one at a time. The fire rate for this pistol is fast, offering a good accuracy over a medium range. The main disdadvantage is that reloading can take some time as the cylinder must be spun to let each casing fall out or be pushed out using an ejector located to the right of the barrel. Each round must then be loaded back in through the same door. The pistol is rugged and solidly build, making it an excellent sidearm or primary weapon.

1. What's in the box

In the folder you have unpacked you will find

  • the Colt SAA (right) pistol
  • the Colt SAA (left) pistol
  • three different belts
  • a set of gestures to simplify operation of the weapons
  • a notecard with a briefer version of this page
  • a pose stand in case you want to edit the attachment of the weapons

The weapons gestures and voice commands are pre-set to Channel 5. Should you change this, the gestures will need to be modified to reflect the new channel. All voice commands referred to in this manual assume the default channel of 5

2. The Colt SAA in detail

Throughout this section we assume you will be using both guns. In fact it is possible to just wear one of them, or to wear bth and control them separately. This will be discussed in section 3.

To draw the weapon you may either:

  • Left click on the belt
  • type /5draw in chat
  • press the Shift-F11 key to engage the gesture

Note: Clicking on the belt or holsters draws both guns if attached, unless both guns are already drawn in which case clicking holsters them both. Clicking the butt of a holstered gun draws just that gun.

To fire the weapon enter Mouselook by clicking on the 'mouselook' icon or pressing the M key while the main chat is disabled, and click the left mouse button. To exit Mouselook, press your Escape key or press the M key again.

To reload the gun type /5reload in chat or use the Shift-F9 key. Reload is quite slow but in an emergency you may fire the gun and the reload cycle will be interrupted. The magazine of the gun holds six bullets.

You can set the guns to reload automatically when they are empty. Automatic reload works separately for each gun.

To holster the weapon, type /5holster in the main chat or hit the Shift-F10 key to start the gesture

To get information on the gun, click it when it is attached. You will see a message telling you:

  • The version of the gun
  • The kind and amount of ammunition loaded
  • The channel for voice commands

3. Using the guns independently

It's possible to wear just one gun. If you do this you probably also want to wear the matching holster. Either gun can be used independently in this way.

It's also possible to wear both guns and control them separately, for example, to draw or reload one but not the other. The simplest way to do this is to use a command such as /5left reload to reload just the left gun. It's not possible to fire just one gun having drawn them both because firing is controlled by the mouse, not by chat commands.

You can if you like set a different command channel for one of the guns. For example if you use the command /5left channel 6 then chat commands on channel 6 will just control the left gun. This can get confusing when you want to switch back, and we recommend you to use the left and right commands and not change the channel.

Normally the only effect of dual wield is to change the location at which bullets rezz so that they don't collide. When you fire you will see two bullets a little way apart. However, you can also enable alt fire: this means the guns fire alternately. For this you must, of course, have drawn both guns. If you holster one of them, alt fire will stop and the other will fire each time, but the guns will remember the alt setting and revert to alt fire next time you have both drawn. To stop this you need to turn alt fire off.

If you wear the dual hoster, you can draw a single gun by clicking its butt. Clicking else where draws both guns.

Note: Reloading a gun requires use of both hands. If you reload while both guns are drawn you will reload one then the other, so reload will take 7 seconds.

You can resize the belts by clicking on the buckle. You'll get a resizer menu that allows you to exapnd or contract the belt to fit your waist. Only the belt expands, not the guns. When you select a resize option you will see a wait message; wait until the resize is complete (it's very slow) before you detach the belt or you may mess it up. If the belt ends up looking strange, rez another one from the box and start again.

4. Voice commands

All commands will use channel 5 unless you have changed the setting.

Any command may be preceded by the word left or right to control just that gun.

6. Hints and tips

Mouselook Zoom:

Zoom in mouselook - Invaluable for distance work, press Ctrl-8 to zoom out, Ctrl-0 (zero) to zoom in and Ctrl-9 to reset it to normal. The zoom factor WILL mean the difference between hit & miss on far away targets. You get up to 13x nearer...

Don't forget to Ctrl-9 when done, it's really weird doing anything in normal mode at 13x zoom.

Draw Distance:

From your Client's menu, pick Edit > Preferences, go into 'Graphics', look for 'Draw Distance' and change this value to up to 512m for those far away targets. Just don't forget to change it back to the original value when you're done, as it takes a lot of machine resource to draw all the objects in a 512m wide area.

Dual controls

Remember you can control the guns separately. For example, you could have CCS normal ammo in one gun and CCS stamina ammo in the other.

If you use autoreload and both guns run out of ammo at the same time you face an interval of 7 seconds or so while they reload. Do something to get them out of step - for example, fire and then reload just the left gun - and then reloads will last at most 3 seconds.
