Steam Crossbow

Mr Dryke's steam-powered crossbow brings the convenience of the mechanical era to the ancient sport of toxophily. A steam powered engine located in the weapon's butt is enabled by an ingenious arrangement of gears to perform several different tasks: it drives the rotating magazine, which can contain 12 bolts, it supplies power for the Kandelski lift, which propels the arrow in the upper slot of the magazine into the firing chamber, and it supplies the force that automatically draws back the bowstring for the next shot. Mr Dryke informs us that his patented Kandelski lift, based on a design for a repeating crossbow in the Wujing Zongyao that he was able to consult while visiting China, has never been known to jam, even when the bow was exposed to the extreme temperatures encountered by travellers in tropical areas.

The selfless public spirit and devotion to the Empire for which Mr Dryke is renowned has impelled him to furnish the Prince Consort with a sample of his remarkable weapon, which, he asserts, has many uses in both international and internecine combat, being, as he says in his memoir: 'silent, deadly, of great range and accuracy, and free of the hazard met in most firearms, that their charges will detonate any explosive device they may accidentally strike'.

1. What's in the box

In the folder you have unpacked you will find

  • the steam crossbow and the slung version of the steam crossbow
  • a set of gestures to simplify operation of the weapons
  • a quick reference notecard
  • a pose stand in case you want to resize or refit the weapons
  • a copy/transfer arrow wound that works with the roleplay bolt

The weapons gestures and voice commands are pre-set to Channel 5. Should you change this, the gestures will need to be modified to reflect the new channel. All voice commands referred to in this manual assume the default channel of 5

2. The Steam Crossbow in detail

To draw the crossbow you may either:

  • Left click on the slung bow
  • type /5 draw in chat
  • hit the Shift-F11 key to engage the gesture

To fire the bow go to mouselook, point the gun as required and press the left mouse button.

To sling the bow type /5 sling in the main chat or hit the Shift-F10 key to start the gesture.

The bow holds 12 bolts. To reload it type /5 reload in the main chat. If autoreload is enabled the bow will reload automatically when it is empty. Loading is quite slow but can be interrupted if you need to use the bow in a hurry.

Note that the bow has a 'tactical reload' facility. A bolt can remain in the chamber while the rotor operates; so if you fully reload the bow with 12 bolts from empty, one bolt will be chambered, allowing you to load one extra bolt. In the stat display a chambered bolt is marked as +1.

You can operate the bow standing or prone. The bolts do more damage when fired prone but you will be unable to move while aiming. To switch between standing and prone hit the Shift-F12 key.

4. Resizing

The crossbow cannot be resized in the editor as it is no mod. However, you may adjust the size using a menu. To obtain consistent results wear both held and slung version at the same time.

Wear the weapons and say /5resize in chat. A menu of options also appears: either choose the amount by which you want to increase or decrease the size, or select Reset to restore the weapon to its size when shipped. The menu reappears until you select Done.

When you choose a resize option, the bow has to resize prim by prim. This may take a little time. Don't issue another command or otherwise use the blade until both forms have told you they are done. Make sure you keep a copy of the original bow in case you mess it up. Note: You can get the latest package at any time from a Delta redelivery terminal.

5. Damage and statistics

  • Bullet capacity: 12 (plus one chambered)
  • Time between shots: 1 second
  • Time to reload an empty weapon: 5 seconds
  • Bullet speed: 60 m/s
  • Effective range of weapon: unlimited

This gun has three CCS rounds.

Bullet base damage + 2.5% LIFE + 2.5% MELE

Bullet base damage + 3% STAMINA + 2.5% MELE

Bullet base damage + POISON (20 damage per tick for 1 minute) + 2.5% MELE (every 5th shot)

When b3 is loaded unenhanced bullets are fired on four out of five shots.

There are also bolts for damage enabled land and for roleplay sims

6. Hints and tips

Bolts Bolts are scripted in lsl rather than mono to reduce memory usage. Occasionally when the sim is very heavily lagged a number of bolts may de delayed and then appear in a burst: this is a restriction on rezzing of temp rezz objects imposed by Linden Labs.

Crossbow wound Give a copy of the wound to someone you plan to shoot and have them attach it; remember to use the roleplay bolt!

Reset We are not aware of any circumstances in which the weapon will 'lock' but should this happen the simplest solution is to rezz a new weapon from the product box. If you have lost that you can get a new one from any redelivery terminal.

Zooming Although the normal alt-zoom mechanism doesn't work in mouse look, you can adjust zoom to some extent using Ctrl-8 (zoom out) and Ctrl-0 (zoom in); Ctrl-9 resets.

Range This is a fast weapon whose bolts travel indefinitely (until they hit something or go off world). Its minimum range is about 3m.

Mouse look If you are in a viewer such as Viewer 2 that has no mouse look button, remember that it's possible to enter mouse look, and so aim the gun, by rolling the mouse wheel forward; unlike the M key this works even if you have chat open.

The model was made by Corvus Dryke. Animations are by TheMinus Ziskey.
